Brockenhurst is Awarded ‘Plastic Free Communities’ Status as it Takes Action on Single-Use Plastic

Brockenhurst has joined a network of communities across the UK who are leading the way to tackle throw away plastic at source. The village has been awarded Plastic Free Community status by marine conservation charity, Surfers Against Sewage (SAS), in recognition of the work it has done to start reducing the impact of single-use plastic on the environment.

Greener Brockenhurst & local residents started the campaign in 2022 after wanting to do something to encourage the village reduce its use of single use plastic. Brockenhurst Parish Council, thought it was a great idea, and we pledged our support of the campaign and do our bit within our own organisation. And many other local businesses and community groups did the same. We are now delighted to hear that enough has been achieved within the village for us to have been awarded ‘Plastic Free Communities’ status. Plastic Free Community status is not easily won and is a great achievement for the whole village.

Of course, Brockenhurst is very far from being actually free from single use plastic, but this is a first step along the way and we at Brockenhurst Parsih Council will continue to support the campaign as it continues to challenge our throwaway culture and protect the environment.
