Brookley Road Scheme and Cycle Racks

An Overview

Brockenhurst Parish Council removed the cycle racks in Brookley Road in late May 2023 following damage sustained in a traffic incident. The cycle racks, located outside of Tesco Express, were hit over the Bank holiday weekend and once the damage was reported the racks were taped closed. The tape was subsequently removed by cyclists parking their bikes. Despite continued heavy demand for their use over the Bank holiday period the cycle racks have been removed due to health and safety concerns.

Subject: Brookley Road, Brockenhurst Improvements – Preconstruction Information

Good afternoon,

I am writing to inform you that Hampshire County Council has appointed M Group Highways to carry out improvements works on Brookley Road. These works have been carefully coordinated to include essential drainage repairs alongside the construction of new Active Travel infrastructure.

The benefits of this scheme will consist of a repaired road drainage system, better crossing environment for pedestrians and a raised area for community events in the village and to encourage drivers to reduce their speed.

Ahead of the main works starting, investigations night works will take place on Monday 7 April, permitted working hours between 6:30pm to 6am. To ensure the safety of the travelling public and the operatives, a section of the road will be closed and advanced warning and diversion signs will be in place.

Works start on 22 April for approximately eight weeks, works will be undertaken daytime and nighttime. A section of Brookley Road, in the carriageway immediately outside Tesco, will temporarily be closed for the duration of the works and parking bays suspended.

During the construction works on Brookley Road, both the Tesco car park and Brookley Road car park will need to be closed at different stages. This is necessary to ensure the safety of both the operatives and the public. The Brookley Road car park will be closed starting Tuesday 22 April from 7pm to 3am, for approximately 9 days. On-street parking along Brookley Road will still be available during the construction.

Scheme improvements include;

  1. A repaired road drainage system;
  2. Build a raised section of the road on Brookley Road;
  3. Install new traffic bollards to mark the vehicle route through the raised area and installation of tactile (bumpy) paving to aid visually impaired pedestrians;
  4. Create new continuous footways over two junctions near the raised area, across the entrances to both the Tesco and Brookley Road car parks on either side of Brookley Road, as this will give priority to pedestrians using the footways;
  5. Install block paving outside Tesco to tie in with the existing environment in front of the Terrace.

Advance warning signs will be in place. Emergency vehicle access to properties will be maintained at all times. Pedestrian and resident access will be maintained at all times. ‘Businesses open as usual signs’ will be displayed at either end of Brookley Road.

The nature of the work may bring some disruption or inconvenience however, every effort will be made to keep this to a minimum. Please note that the works are weather dependent and may need to be re-arranged at short notice in the event of adverse weather.
